Gujarat National Law University

Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) is a National Law University established under the ''Gujarat National Law University Act, 2003"'' in the state of Gujarat. Regarded as one of the most prestigious law universities in India, the university is located at Gandhinagar, which is the capital of Gujarat and is located 7 kilometers north of the city of Ahmedabad. The statute provides that the Chief Justice of India or a Senior Supreme Court Judge serve as the Visitor of the university. The Director, Dr. Bimal N. Patel, an internationally acclaimed scholar and United Nations civil servant serves as the chief administrator. The university started in 2004 and has five batches of 180 students each under training.It is ranked as the 4th Best Law school in the country as of 2015. The university is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and University Grants Commission (UGC) (2f & 12b). The university is also member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the university is functioning as nodal agency to uplift the legal education in the State of Gujarat. It is ranked as the fastest growing law school in India. ==History==

GNLU was formed in the year 2003 by the efforts of the then Solicitor General of India, Late Mr. Kirit Raval, the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the Bar Council of India. The University is based on the structure that was established two decades ago by the NLSIU Bangalore. The GNLU Act 2003 proclaims, " shall be to advance and disseminate learning and knowledge of law and legal processes and their role in national development: to develop in the students and the research scholars sense of responsibility to serve society in the field of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation, parliamentary practice, law reforms and such other matters; to make law and legal processes efficient instruments of social development; and to promote inter-disciplinary study of law in relation to management, technology, international cooperation and development." GNLU was the seventh National Law University to be set up in the country. It was established with the active support of the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat and the judicial fraternity. Eminent lawyers played a pivotal role in setting up the Institute. Prof. V.S. Mani, reputed Space Law expert was the first Director with Prof Dr. RH Gorane as the first Registrar and Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao, Director of Indira Gandhi National Open University Law as the first Chief Warden.
